Early in 2008 YouTube had to remove all of the music videos from its site after licensing negotiations could not be finalized. As we all know, YouTube has a massive user base and it shocked thousands if not millions of visitors that they could now no longer watch their favorite artists online.
But things to be all changing now as YouTube have finalized a deal with PRS who deal with paying royalties to the songwriters and musicians. The deal this time though is slightly different as YouTube have agreed to pay a lump sum rather than a pay per view model which was previously mentioned. The deal is set to last up until 2012.
So what does this mean to YouTube and the music industry? We thousands of videos will now be placed back onto the site. Although it will take about a week to restore all of the music videos, visitors to the site will be delighted with the news that they can once again watch their favourite artists perform some great songs.
Personally it’s a relief to see these great videos back, but I think the thing that we are forgetting to understand here is how much of a power horse YouTube actually is. I mean the site when it first launched was truly a great resource and it made unknown people become stars, simply because of their superb talent.
YouTube, in my personal opinion, should be paid money rather than giving it away to licensing. The artists and record labels should not really want money for having their videos on YouTube, because in the end it gives them free extra exposure.
Just think of it this way, an artist is releasing a new single which has not been broadcast much over the radio or television, but that artist is getting searched for huge amounts on YouTube and on Google. This would give their new single great air time and it would make people start talking about it and start blogging. If these users then like these songs they are going to go and purchase it from the shop or order the single online. Which will end up making the artist and record label more money.
YouTube already have major costs due to the server, space and bandwidth issues. We should instead be looking after a site like this, because if things continue to make a loss there is no way they can survive.
